What is TENS?
Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) is a non-invasive, nonpharmacological electrotherapeutic
procedure used for pain control. TENS involves the application of electrical current through electrodes placed on
the skin through the accompanied use of the BioStim Plus® TENS Unit or similar TENS Units.
How does it work?
TENS works by increasing endogenous inhibition and
reducing central excitability. More specifically,
low-frequency TENS (1-10 Hz) activates μ-opioid
receptors, and high-frequency TENS (50-150 Hz)
activates δ-opioid receptors
